THE CONNECTIONS MATTER

Similar letters. Different jobs.

Resolve the mix-ups that come up in meetings, handoffs, and production reports.

Mcf vs. MMcf

Mcf is one thousand cubic feet. MMcf is one million: 1 MMcf = 1,000 Mcf. Keep the gas reference conditions consistent.

LNG vs. LPG vs. NGL

LNG is cooled natural gas, mostly methane. LPG commonly means propane and butanes. NGL is a wider group of liquids recovered from natural gas.

MD vs. TVD

MD follows the well path. TVD measures vertical distance. They diverge in a deviated well; always check the depth datum.

GOR vs. GLR

GOR divides gas by oil volume. GLR divides gas by total liquid volume, often oil plus water. A changing water cut can make the distinction important.

BOE vs. MMBtu

Both express energy equivalence, but use different bases. Neither guarantees equal market value; gas volume conversions also require heat content.

1P vs. 2P vs. 3P

1P is proved reserves. 2P adds probable. 3P also adds possible. They are nested totals, so adding all three double-counts volumes.

WI vs. NRI

Working interest generally carries a share of operating costs. Net revenue interest reflects the share of revenue after specified burdens.

MWD vs. LWD

MWD commonly focuses on drilling conditions and trajectory. LWD focuses on formation measurements. Modern tool strings often combine both.
