THE CONNECTIONS MATTER

Similar letters. Different jobs.

Read retail reports with confidence. Explore ten distinctions that help store teams, buyers, and analysts stay on the same page.

SKU vs. UPC vs. GTIN

A SKU is an internal stock identifier. GTIN is a global trade-item identifier. A UPC-A barcode carries a GTIN-12. The number and the printed symbol perform different jobs.

UPT vs. ATV vs. AUR

UPT measures units per transaction, ATV measures sales per transaction, and AUR measures sales per unit. With matching sales, unit, and transaction bases, ATV = UPT × AUR.

Gross margin vs. markup

Gross margin percentage uses sales as the denominator. Markup on cost uses cost. A $60 sale with $40 cost has a 33.33% gross margin and a 50% markup on cost. State the basis for IMU.

GMROI vs. inventory turns

GMROI compares gross margin dollars with average stock cost. Inventory turns compare COGS with average stock cost. One measures gross-margin return; the other measures stock cycling. Match the period.

BOPIS vs. BORIS vs. ROPIS

BOPIS starts with an online purchase and store collection. BORIS is an online purchase returned in store. ROPIS starts with a reservation; payment timing follows the retailer’s process.

On hand vs. ATS vs. ATP

On hand is the recorded stock. ATS is what the system allows to be sold. ATP is what can be promised for a date, potentially using expected receipts and existing commitments.

AP has three retail meanings

Finance uses accounts payable. Merchandising uses assortment planning. Store security uses asset protection. The team, report title, and surrounding sentence identify the likely meaning.

GM: margin, manager, or merchandise?

An earnings report may use gross margin, an organization chart general manager, and a grocery assortment general merchandise. Spell out GM when sharing information across departments.

ROAS vs. ROI vs. MER

ROAS compares attributed ad revenue with ad spend. ROI compares a defined gain with an investment. MER commonly compares total revenue with included marketing spend. None is interchangeable without checking the formula.

EDI 855 vs. EDI 997

An 855 communicates the business response to a purchase order. A 997 acknowledges functional receipt and syntax processing. A successfully received message does not by itself mean an order was accepted.

Less administration. More time for your people.
