Planned hours ÷ full-time hours basis

Use the same time period for both inputs. This is planning FTE, not the ACA employer-size calculation.

THE CONNECTIONS MATTER

Similar letters. Different jobs.

Connect the concepts behind the shorthand. Explore twelve distinctions that help scheduling, HR, and operations teams avoid common misunderstandings.

Headcount vs. FTE vs. ACA FTE

Headcount counts people. Planning FTE converts hours using a stated basis. ACA employer-size FTE uses specific IRS monthly rules. A single hours divisor cannot answer all three questions.

PTO vs. FMLA vs. disability benefits

PTO describes paid absence under a policy. FMLA addresses qualifying leave and job protections. STD and LTD concern income-replacement benefits. These can overlap, but one does not automatically establish the others.

PT: status, time zone, or therapist?

A staffing report may use PT for part time, a meeting notice for Pacific Time, and a healthcare roster for physical therapist. Read the column heading and surrounding context.

VTO and RDO: check the legend

VTO can mean voluntary time off or volunteer time off. RDO can be a regular day off or a requested day off. Pay status and approval are separate details that need confirmation.

Overtime vs. compensatory time

Overtime is governed by applicable wage rules. Compensatory time is permitted only in particular arrangements. A roster code or an employee’s preference does not make required overtime pay disappear.

Federal AWS vs. California AWS

Federal alternative work schedules include flexible and compressed arrangements. California alternative workweek schedules follow a different legal framework. A 4/10 or 9/80 label alone does not establish compliance.

FWW: scheduling or overtime method?

Fair workweek refers to certain predictable-scheduling protections. Fluctuating workweek refers to a particular overtime calculation method. The same letters describe very different subjects.

Occupancy vs. adherence vs. shrinkage

Occupancy concerns activity within defined available time. Adherence compares actual and scheduled activities. Shrinkage accounts for scheduled capacity unavailable for the intended productive work. Check each denominator.

AHT vs. ASA vs. service level

AHT describes handling time. ASA describes waiting time to answer included contacts. Service level tests a specified response-time target. None is a substitute for the others.

ET vs. EST vs. EDT

ET is a regional label. EST fixes the offset at UTC−5; EDT at UTC−4. A named time zone and date are safer for recurring schedules and daylight-saving transitions.

HOS vs. hours worked

Transportation HOS rules govern specified duty and driving limits. Wage rules determine compensable work. Fatigue management adds another operational consideration; these questions require separate checks.

Calendar snapshot vs. recurrence

An ICS file may be a one-time export. RRULE describes recurrence, EXDATE removes occurrences, and TZID identifies a time zone. Confirm whether updates actually synchronize with the source roster.

Less administration. More time for your people.
