THE CONNECTIONS MATTER

Similar letters. Different jobs.

Read reports and talk across disciplines with fewer misunderstandings. Explore eight distinctions that help prevent confusion.

RFI vs. CO vs. CCD

An RFI seeks clarification. A change order records an agreed contract change. A construction change directive directs a change while its adjustment is unresolved. Follow the contract for authority and notice.

Three everyday meanings of CO

In a change log, CO usually means change order. At occupancy, it can mean certificate of occupancy. On a plumbing drawing, it can mean cleanout. Safety documents also use CO for carbon monoxide.

RCP: ceiling plan or pipe?

Architecture uses RCP for reflected ceiling plan. Civil and drainage drawings use it for reinforced concrete pipe. Check the discipline and drawing legend.

PFAS: safety or environmental?

A personal fall arrest system helps arrest a worker’s fall. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a family of manufactured chemicals. The two uses share letters, not a purpose.

OPR vs. BOD

Owner’s project requirements describe the performance and outcomes the owner needs. The basis of design explains the design team’s technical approach to meeting those needs.

QA vs. QC

Quality assurance establishes confidence in the process. Quality control checks the work and its conformity. The project quality plan assigns the responsibilities for each.

IFC has three meanings

IFC can be a document issue status, an open model exchange schema, or the International Fire Code. Confirm the context before using an IFC file or instruction.

CPR: payroll or first aid?

Certified payroll reports document covered payroll and certification. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency response skill. The subject identifies the intended meaning.

Less administration. More time for your people.
