Washington, DC bonus withholding FAQ

Does Washington, DC tax bonuses?

For DC residents and other employees subject to DC withholding, wage bonuses can be subject to District income tax. This calculator estimates the incremental DC tax using OTR's resident income-tax brackets unless nonresident/exempt or custom rate mode is selected.

Does DC Paid Family Leave reduce take-home bonus pay?

No. DC Paid Family Leave is funded by an employer-paid payroll tax and, according to the Office of Paid Family Leave, may not be deducted from a worker's paycheck.

Why can aggregate federal withholding differ from 22%?

The aggregate method adds the bonus to regular wages for a payroll period, calculates federal withholding on the combined payment, then subtracts the withholding on regular wages alone.
