Georgia bonus withholding FAQ

Does Georgia withhold income tax from bonuses?

Yes. Georgia's 2026 Employer's Tax Guide treats bonuses and other compensation as taxable wages and directs employers to use the income-tax rate in effect when the compensation is paid.

Which Georgia rate applies in 2026?

Use 5.19% for payments through May 10. Georgia says employers may begin using 4.99% on May 11, 2026. The payment date input switches the estimate at that cutoff.

Why was 5.19% withheld earlier if the final 2026 rate is 4.99%?

HB 463 made the 4.99% individual rate applicable to tax years beginning January 1, 2026, but the withholding change began after enactment. Withholding is a prepayment and is reconciled on the employee's return.

Is there a Georgia local bonus withholding line?

This calculator uses $0. Georgia DOR's official W-2 record specification tells filers to leave local taxable wages and local income-tax-withheld fields blank.

Does Georgia unemployment tax reduce the employee's bonus?

No. Georgia unemployment tax is employer-paid. The optional estimate appears only in total employer cost and uses the first $9,500 of covered wages.

Is 22% the employee's final federal tax rate?

No. It is an allowed federal withholding method for qualifying separately identified supplemental wages. Final federal and Georgia income-tax liability is determined on the tax return.
