2026 Louisiana bonus withholding

Louisiana Bonus Pay Tax Calculator

Estimate a Louisiana employee's net bonus with the state's 2026 regular-pay withholding formula, Form L-4 settings, federal supplemental-wage methods, annual wage caps, employer costs, and net-to-gross calculations.

Bonus inputs

Use gross-to-net for a planned bonus or net-to-gross when a take-home amount was promised. This tool is limited to one-time or nonperiodic taxable cash bonuses; use a full paycheck calculation for regular or periodic wages, commissions, and overtime.

Enter the taxable bonus to be paid.
Federal flat withholding can apply to a separately identified amount when eligible. Louisiana treats supplemental wages like regular payroll even when paid separately; the automatic state choice uses the regular-pay formula for a separate payment and a combined/difference estimate when paid with regular wages.
The optional 22% federal flat method generally depends on regular wages having had income tax withheld in the current or prior year.
Used only for the 2026 $184,500 Social Security wage-base check.
Used for the employer's $200,000 Additional Medicare withholding threshold.
Include supplemental wages paid in 2026 by this employer and businesses under common control for the $1 million federal test.
Used for aggregate withholding comparisons.

The mobile-worker profile is conditional. If Louisiana work exceeds 30 days, withholding applies to every Louisiana workday in the year, including the first 30.
Profile presets update this control. Clear it only with documented support such as a valid current L-4E or every required mobile-workforce fact.
Louisiana has no special flat bonus rate. Automatic uses the regular-pay formula for a separate payment and a combined/difference estimate when paid with regular wages.
Used only for a documented custom override. The ordinary 2026 payroll formula rate is 3.09%, not a special bonus rate.
Use 100% for fully Louisiana-taxable wages. Enter a supportable Louisiana-source allocation for multistate services.
Used only for the combined/difference estimate. Enter Louisiana-taxable regular wages for the payroll period associated with the bonus.
The current L-4 uses codes 0, 1, and 2 and has no dependent count. A missing L-4 requires code 0.
Enter an increase as positive or a permitted decrease as negative. Louisiana withholding cannot fall below zero.
Employer cost estimate settings
Used only for the employer-side Louisiana unemployment wage-base estimate.
Louisiana Works lists a $7,000 taxable wage base for 2026.
The 1.00% default is only the statutory first-three-year minimum. New employers receive an industry-based rate; enter the total assigned 2026 notice rate.
This changes employer cost only; Louisiana UI cannot be deducted from employee wages.
Used only for the employer-side $7,000 FUTA wage-base estimate.
Default assumes the full 5.4% state credit. Louisiana rate notices report a FUTA-creditable factor; use the employer's actual federal treatment.

What this calculator includes

Federal supplemental methods

Model the optional 22% method, the mandatory 37% rate only above $1 million of calendar-year supplemental wages, and the aggregate method using the 2026 Publication 15-T tables.

Louisiana regular-pay treatment

Apply the 3.09% computer formula with L-4 code 0, 1, or 2, or estimate the bonus increment by comparing regular wages with regular wages plus the bonus.

Employee and employer costs separated

Test Social Security, Additional Medicare, Louisiana UI, and FUTA against separate inputs so employer taxes never reduce take-home.

Louisiana bonus withholding FAQ

Does Louisiana have a flat bonus withholding rate?

No special state bonus rate is published. LDR says supplemental wages are withheld the same as regular payroll even when paid separately. The 2026 regular-pay formula uses 3.09% after the selected L-4 standard deduction.

Why does the calculator show 3.09% when Louisiana's tax rate is 3%?

LDR says 3.09% is a withholding cushion intended to reduce balances due. The final individual income-tax rate is 3%, and excess withholding is refundable.

How are bonuses paid with regular wages estimated?

The calculator finds Louisiana formula withholding on the combined wages and subtracts formula withholding on regular Louisiana wages alone. LDR does not publish a special bonus-allocation formula, so this result is labeled a combined/difference estimate.

Does the 2026 Form L-4 use dependents?

No. The current form uses deduction code 0, 1, or 2 plus a signed line 7 adjustment. Missing L-4 means no standard deduction.

Can a short-term nonresident avoid Louisiana withholding?

Possibly. A qualifying multistate nonresident with 30 or fewer Louisiana workdays and no other Louisiana-source income may be exempt. Excluded professions and home-state conditions apply; after day 30, withholding reaches all Louisiana workdays, including the first 30.

What does a valid L-4E do?

It can support no Louisiana withholding for a qualifying no-liability employee or SCRA servicemember/spouse. The certificate and facts must be current; the calculator preset is not a substitute for employer records.

Does Louisiana unemployment tax reduce the bonus?

No. Louisiana UI is employer-paid. The panel uses the 2026 $7,000 wage base and an editable assigned rate; 1.00% is only a labeled minimum example, not a universal new-employer rate.

Can this calculator gross up a promised net bonus?

Yes. Net-to-gross mode solves numerically across the federal $1 million rule, Social Security cap, Additional Medicare threshold, Louisiana treatment, allocation, and the signed L-4 adjustment.
