California bonus withholding FAQ

Are California bonuses taxed at 40%?

No single 40% bonus tax exists. A California bonus can have federal income tax withholding, California PIT withholding, Social Security, Medicare, Additional Medicare if applicable, and California SDI withheld from the same payment.

Why does California use 10.23%?

California EDD lists 10.23% as the flat supplemental PIT withholding rate for bonuses and stock options. Other supplemental wages use 6.6% when the flat supplemental method is allowed.

Why is aggregate withholding different?

The aggregate method adds the bonus to a regular payroll period, figures withholding on the combined amount, then subtracts withholding on the regular wages. It can be higher or lower than the flat method.

Does this calculate final tax owed?

No. It estimates payroll withholding. The employee's final tax depends on annual income, deductions, credits, filing status, and other income reported on the income tax return.

Calculate bonuses inside the full payroll workflow

One-off bonus estimates are helpful, but payroll teams still need approved earnings, tax settings, direct deposit, pay stubs, and audit-ready records in the same system.
