Delaware Bonus Pay Tax Calculator

2026 Delaware bonus withholding

Delaware Bonus Pay Tax Calculator

Estimate a Delaware employee's net bonus with Delaware's official supplemental-wage methods, federal withholding, FICA, Delaware Paid Leave, optional Wilmington wage tax, employer costs, and net-to-gross planning.

Bonus inputs

Use gross-to-net for a planned taxable cash bonus or net-to-gross for a promised take-home amount. Delaware does not publish a flat bonus rate; its calculation changes with payment presentation.

Enter the taxable bonus to be paid.
Presentation controls federal eligibility and Delaware's method. A separately paid bonus is added once to annualized regular wages; a same-pay bonus is treated as part of one regular-period payment.
The optional 22% federal method generally depends on federal income tax having been withheld from regular wages in the current or prior year.
Daily federal estimates use 260 workdays; Delaware's official daily annualization factor is 300.
Used by federal aggregate logic and Delaware's same-pay or separate-pay difference calculation.
Enter wages before this bonus for the 2026 $184,500 Social Security wage-base test.
Additional Medicare withholding begins after this employer pays more than $200,000.
Include 2026 supplemental wages from this employer and businesses under common control for the $1 million federal test.
Delaware withholding settings
Modern federal W-4 fields do not replace Form DE-W4. Nonresident withholding requires DE-W4NR proration and cannot be reproduced from workdays alone.
The annualized formula subtracts a $110 annual personal-exemption credit for each allowance.
Used only for the nonresident profile. Enter the payroll amount determined from DE-W4NR and the employee's actual facts.
Applied once to the bonus after the required Delaware difference is calculated.
Wilmington wage tax settings
Used only for a nonresident. Wilmington residents are generally subject on 100% of earned compensation; special deferred or multistate incentive allocations need city review.
Federal Form W-4 settings
Delaware Paid Leave and employer-cost settings
Public-plan minimums generally depend on eligible Delaware employee count: 1-9 exempt, 10-24 parental only, and 25+ full coverage.
Used only in custom mode. Enter the verified total contribution rate, not only the employee share.
Employers may deduct from 0% to 50% of the total contribution. Fifty percent is a maximum, not a universal employee rate.
Use a separate Delaware in-state FICA-wage total for multistate employees.
Employer-cost allocation only; it never changes employee Delaware income withholding.
The 2026 new-employer basic rate is 1.00%. Experienced rates range from 0.30% to 5.40%; the delinquent rate is 6.30%. The employer's notice controls.
Separate 2026 rate. Do not enter it again in the assigned basic UI rate.
Title 19 sets 0.110% when the UI wage base is $14,500.
0.6% assumes the full state-unemployment credit. Enter 0 for an employer that is confirmed FUTA-exempt.

Delaware official difference methods

Separate payment: add the bonus once to annualized regular wages and subtract annual tax. Same payment: subtract regular-period withholding from withholding on the combined period.

Model eligible 22% and aggregate federal methods, 37% above $1 million, Social Security through $184,500, Medicare, and Additional Medicare above $200,000.

Employee and employer lines stay separate

Keep Wilmington and any employee Paid Leave share in take-home while keeping Delaware UI assessments, FUTA, employer FICA, and employer Paid Leave outside it.

Delaware bonus withholding FAQ

Does Delaware have a flat bonus withholding rate?

No. The state guide prescribes difference calculations. The 6.60% top bracket is not a flat bonus rate.

How is a separately paid bonus handled?

Annualize regular wages, calculate annual Delaware tax, add the one-time bonus once, recalculate annual tax, and withhold the difference.

How is a bonus on the regular check handled?

Treat regular wages and the bonus as one payment for that payroll period. The bonus-attributable estimate is combined-period withholding minus regular-period withholding.

Why does Delaware use its own W-4?

Delaware still uses withholding allowances and a $110 credit per allowance. A federal Form W-4 from 2020 or later does not provide the required state allowance count.

Can employees pay part of Delaware Paid Leave?

Yes. An employer is responsible for the contribution but may deduct 0% to 50% of the total cost from covered employees.

Does Delaware unemployment reduce take-home?

No. UI, operations and technology, and training assessments are employer-only. Bonuses count as wages through the annual wage base.

Is Wilmington wage tax included?

Yes, when selected. The rate remains 1.25% across calendar 2026 for residents' earned income and for nonresident compensation attributable to work in Wilmington.

Can the calculator gross up a promised net bonus?

Yes. Net-to-gross mode solves against the selected federal method, Delaware withholding, Wilmington wage tax, FICA, and any employee Paid Leave share.

Disclaimer: This calculator provides 2026 payroll estimates for regular taxable cash bonuses paid to W-2 employees based on standard federal withholding guidelines, official Delaware Division of Revenue difference methods, and 2026 Delaware Paid Leave contribution rules. Actual paycheck amounts may vary based on Form DE-W4 or DE-W4NR allowances and proration, local Wilmington wage tax obligations, employee shares of Paid Leave contributions, multi-state sourcing, or assigned employer unemployment insurance assessments. These calculations are intended solely for planning and illustrative purposes and do not constitute formal tax, legal, or accounting advice; employers should verify current state withholding regulations, municipal ordinances, and employee payroll records prior to issuing checks.
