West Virginia Bonus Pay Tax Calculator

Estimate a West Virginia employee's net bonus with 2026 federal supplemental-wage methods, the March 2026 West Virginia annual percentage schedules, IT-104 exemptions, optional local payroll taxes or fees, FICA thresholds, employer unemployment cost, and net-to-gross planning.

Bonus inputs

Use gross-to-net for a planned bonus or net-to-gross when a take-home amount was promised. This tool is limited to one-time or nonperiodic taxable cash bonuses; use a full paycheck calculation for regular or periodic wages, commissions, and overtime.

Enter the taxable bonus to be paid.
Payment presentation controls the federal method. West Virginia publishes no universal flat bonus rate, so the state estimate annualizes regular pay, selects the applicable March 2026 table rate, and applies that rate to the allocated bonus.
The optional 22% federal flat method generally depends on regular wages having had income tax withheld in the current or prior year.
For a bonus paid with regular wages, include those same-pay regular wages before allocating the remaining 2026 $184,500 wage base to this bonus.
For a bonus paid with regular wages, include those same-pay regular wages before applying the employer's $200,000 Additional Medicare withholding threshold to this bonus.
Include supplemental wages paid in 2026 by this employer and businesses under common control for the $1 million federal test.
Required for West Virginia rate selection in every mode; also used for federal aggregate estimates. Enter ordinary taxable wages for one pay period.
Federal aggregate settings (Form W-4 2020 or later)
West Virginia withholding and local settings
Reciprocity applies to qualifying residents of Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Every exemption profile requires a valid certificate and all official conditions. IT-104.1 low-income certificates require separate payroll review because annual limits can be exceeded by the bonus.
Use the optional lower schedule only when the employee checked line 5 of Form IT-104.
Each exemption removes $2,000 annually, prorated by pay period, under IT-100.2A and W. Va. Code section 11-21-71.
Residents normally use 100%. Nonresidents should use supported work-location records; TSD 437 sources wages to where services were performed.
Enter only an additional amount the employee and employer specifically apply to this bonus payment.
Section 8-13C-2 requires a qualifying municipality, an employer place of business there, and more than $10,000 of annual earned income.
Default 0%. Section 8-13C-3 permits no more than 1%; the rate is ignored unless eligibility is confirmed above.
Use the share of this bonus taxable by the applicable municipality; this does not change state withholding.
Default $0. County and municipal service fees can be pay-period or workweek based, not bonus percentages. Enter only the actual fee triggered on this check.
Employer cost settings
Percentage cost applies only to a contributing employer. Reimbursing and not-subject employers require separate review.
Section 21A-1A-28 includes bonuses in wages. Include same-pay regular wages before allocating the remaining annual base.
Section 21A-1A-28 limits ordinary taxable wages to the first $9,500 paid to an employee in the calendar year.
Enter the effective assigned rate from the employer's current notice. Section 21A-5-5(d) changed rates on July 1, 2026, and public implementation guidance is limited; the calculator does not apply a second automatic reduction.
Choose exempt only after confirming the employer's federal classification; do not infer FUTA treatment solely from West Virginia reimbursement status.
Include same-pay regular wages before allocating the remaining $7,000 FUTA wage base.
0.6% assumes the full state-unemployment credit. The 2026 credit-reduction determination is not final until after the federal November 10 deadline.

What this calculator includes

Federal supplemental methods

Model the optional 22% method, the mandatory 37% rate above the $1 million threshold, and the aggregate method using the 2026 Publication 15-T automated tables for a Form W-4 from 2020 or later.

Use annualized allocated regular pay, the March 2026 default or optional schedule, $2,000 exemptions, work-state allocation, and certificate profiles to select the rate applied to the bonus.

Local and employer items stay separate

Keep optional municipal occupational tax and service fees visible in employee deductions while testing West Virginia UI and FUTA against their own employer-only wage bases.

West Virginia bonus withholding FAQ

Does West Virginia withhold income tax from a bonus?

Yes, an ordinary taxable cash bonus is compensation subject to withholding. West Virginia publishes no universal flat bonus rate, so this tool estimates the bonus's incremental withholding with IT-100.2A.

Which 2026 West Virginia rates are used?

The March 2026 percentage tables: 2.11%, 2.81%, 3.16%, 4.22%, and 4.58%. The Tax Division says the cut is retroactive to January 1, 2026.

When can an employer use the federal 22% method?

It is optional for an eligible separately paid or separately identified supplemental amount when federal income tax was withheld from regular wages in the current or immediately preceding year.

When does the federal 37% rate apply?

The excess portion is subject to mandatory 37% withholding and the threshold includes supplemental wages paid by businesses under common control. This calculator applies 37% to the excess portion.

Does West Virginia unemployment insurance reduce take-home?

No. The ordinary contribution is employer-funded. Bonuses count as wages, the annual base is $9,500, and otherwise applicable contribution rates are reduced 7% for wages paid on or after July 1, 2026.

Can local payroll taxes or fees apply?

Potentially. A qualifying municipality may impose an occupational tax of up to 1%, and a county may impose a workweek service fee after voter approval. Both inputs default to zero because the applicable ordinance and work location control.

Why are Social Security and Medicare wages separate?

Social Security stops at $184,500 in 2026, while Medicare has no cap and Additional Medicare withholding begins when this employer pays more than $200,000.

Can this calculator gross up a promised net bonus?

Yes. Net-to-gross mode solves the gross amount across the selected federal method, West Virginia schedule, FICA thresholds, and any entered local tax or service fee.

Does a large bonus trigger a child-support notice?

West Virginia requires an employer to notify the Bureau for Child Support Enforcement two weeks before paying an employment-related bonus of at least $100. Any resulting order is a garnishment, not a tax, and is not automatically calculated here.
