Rhode Island Bonus Pay Tax Calculator
Estimate a Rhode Island employee's net bonus with the official 5.99% supplemental rate or aggregate method, federal withholding, FICA, employee TDI/TCI, employer UI and Job Development Fund costs, and net-to-gross planning.
Bonus inputs
Use gross-to-net for a planned taxable cash bonus or net-to-gross for a promised take-home amount. A separate bonus can use 5.99% or aggregate treatment; a bonus combined with regular wages must use aggregate Rhode Island withholding.
Rhode Island withholding settings
Method boundary: Rhode Island's final 2026 booklet publishes a 5.99% supplemental rate. It also permits aggregate/difference treatment for a separate payment and requires combined-pay treatment when the bonus is paid with regular wages. Withholding is a prepayment, not final income-tax liability.
Federal Form W-4 settings
Federal aggregate estimates use the 2026 Publication 15-T automated percentage method for a Form W-4 from 2020 or later. Older W-4s, nonresident-alien adjustments, exempt status, and special wage facts require payroll review.
Rhode Island TDI and employer-cost settings
Employee TDI/TCI reduces take-home. Rhode Island Employment Security, Job Development Fund, FUTA, and employer FICA remain employer-only costs. No Rhode Island municipal wage-income withholding was found in the reviewed official materials, so local wage tax is shown as $0.
What this calculator includes
Use 5.99% for a qualifying separate bonus or the 2026 percentage-table difference. A bonus paid with regular wages is always treated as one combined payment for Rhode Island withholding.
Apply 1.1% only to bonus wages remaining inside the employee's $100,000 TDI/TCI wage base, separately from income-tax allocation.
Keep Employment Security, the 0.21% Job Development Fund assessment, FUTA, and employer FICA out of employee deductions.
This 2026 estimate covers an ordinary taxable cash bonus to a W-2 employee. It does not determine multistate sourcing, unusual TDI coverage, RI W-4 exemption eligibility, final tax liability, or the employer's assigned UI rate. Use current forms and production payroll records.
Rhode Island bonus withholding FAQ
Does Rhode Island have a flat bonus withholding rate?
Yes. The final 2026 booklet publishes 5.99% for supplemental wages. A separate payment can instead use aggregate treatment.
What if the bonus is on the regular check?
Rhode Island requires withholding as if regular wages and the bonus were one payment. The bonus-only estimate is combined withholding minus the regular-pay baseline.
Why collect actual regular RI withholding?
For a separate aggregate bonus, the booklet says to subtract tax actually withheld from the preceding regular payroll. If that field is blank, this calculator recomputes an estimated baseline.
Does filing status change the RI percentage table?
No. The 2026 percentage tables apply to all filing statuses. RI W-4 allowances, limited to 10, are the state input.
Is TCI another payroll deduction?
No. TCI is part of Rhode Island TDI. The combined employee deduction is 1.1% through $100,000 of 2026 covered wages.
Does Rhode Island unemployment reduce take-home?
No. Employment Security and the Job Development Fund assessment are employer-only and are shown only in the employer-cost estimate.
Are local wage taxes included?
The reviewed official Rhode Island withholding and municipal materials did not identify a municipal wage-income withholding tax, so this ordinary estimate shows local tax as $0.
Can the calculator gross up a promised net bonus?
Yes. Net-to-gross mode solves against the selected federal and Rhode Island methods, FICA, and employee TDI/TCI.
